Importing a car to Kenya can seem overwhelming if you’re doing it for the first time. With many options, dealers, regulations, and costs involved, knowing the right steps will save you time, money, and stress.

At CarsKenya, we’ve helped thousands of clients import vehicles safely and cost-effectively for over 15 years. In this guide, we break down the full process step by step—so you can confidently own your dream car.

Why Import a Car to Kenya?

While local dealerships provide ready vehicles, many Kenyans prefer importing for several key reasons:

  • Better Prices: Direct imports usually cost less than local dealership prices.
  • Wider Variety: Access models, trims, and custom specs not readily available locally.
  • Better Condition: Japanese and UK vehicles are often well-maintained with verified service history.
  • Lower Mileage: Most imports have less mileage than local alternatives.

Step 1: Decide on the Car You Want

Start your car import journey by identifying a vehicle that fits your lifestyle, budget, and performance needs.

At CarsKenya, we make this process easier by offering personalized recommendations based on your preferences—whether you need a fuel-efficient daily driver or a family SUV with extra space.

Popular Categories Among Kenyan Buyers:

  • Toyota: Harrier, Fielder, Premio, Noah
  • Honda: Fit, Vezel, CR-V
  • Subaru: Forester, Outback, Impreza
  • Nissan: X-Trail, Note, Juke

Instead of browsing multiple foreign websites and dealing with the risks of overseas purchases, explore our curated selection of vetted, high-grade vehicles ready for import.

Step 2: Check Import Eligibility

Before importing, confirm the car complies with Kenya’s import regulations:

Vehicle age limit: Must be 8 years or less from the year of first registration.
Right-hand drive (RHD): Only RHD vehicles allowed.
Roadworthiness: Vehicle must be inspected by approved agencies (e.g. QISJ or JEVIC).
No accident history: Cars with major accidents or structural damage are prohibited.

Step 3: Find a Trusted Importer or Agent

If you’re not confident doing it alone, work with a reliable importer like CarsKenya.
We handle everything from sourcing to delivery—including inspection, documentation, port clearance, and duty payment.

Step 4: Pay for the Vehicle

You’ll either:

  • Pay full amount upfront (cash buyers), or
  • Secure import financing through a partner Sacco or bank.

If you’re a CarsKenya client, we partner with Nation Sacco to help finance your dream car even if you don’t have the full amount upfront.

Step 5: Pre-Shipment Inspection

Kenyan law requires all vehicles be inspected before shipment to Mombasa port.
Ensure the exporter organizes inspection with QISJ, JEVIC, or AutoTerminal.

You’ll receive a Certificate of Roadworthiness, which is required by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

Step 6: Shipping to Mombasa Port

Once payment is complete and inspection is done, the car is shipped (usually by RoRo or container).

Typical transit time:

  • From Japan: 4–6 weeks
  • From UK/UAE: 3–5 weeks

You will receive a Bill of Lading (B/L) and shipping documents from the exporter.

Step 7: Port Clearance in Mombasa

This is where most challenges arise—unless you have a trusted clearing agent.

Documents needed for clearance:

  • Bill of Lading (B/L)
  • Pre-inspection certificate
  • Export Certificate
  • KRA PIN and ID
  • Import Declaration Form (IDF)
  • Proforma invoice and purchase invoice

You’ll also pay:

  • Import duty
  • Excise duty
  • VAT
  • Rail Development Levy (RDL)
  • IDF fees

💡 CarsKenya provides full port clearance services for stress-free delivery.

Step 8: Vehicle Registration and Number Plate Issuance

After clearance, the car is registered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Steps:

  1. Log into NTSA TIMS
  2. Apply for registration
  3. Receive new number plates
  4. Obtain a logbook and insurance

How to Access NTSA TIMS

To register your imported car, you’ll need to access the NTSA Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS).

This is Kenya’s official online platform for vehicle registration and other transport-related services.

To get started, visit https://tims.ntsa.go.ke, click on “Register” if you don’t have an account, and choose your category (individual, company, dealer, etc.).

You’ll need your ID number, mother’s maiden name, KRA PIN, and mobile number.

Once your account is active, you can apply for vehicle registration, transfer of ownership, inspection bookings, and more—right from your phone or computer.

Step 9: Delivery to Your Location

Your car can be:

  • Driven directly to your home
  • Delivered via carrier truck (for upcountry buyers)

🚚 CarsKenya offers home delivery services across Kenya.

Step 10: Servicing & Warranties

Once your vehicle is delivered:

  • Get a full service (oil change, filters, battery check)
  • Ensure spare key and accessories are present
  • CarsKenya offers a 1+1 year battery warranty for hybrid imports via our partner JVSC Kenya
